The first immigrants from the western section of Ukraine arrived in Johnstown in the latter half of the 19th century. They settled in the part of the city known as Woodvale and in the neighboring towns of Franklin and Conemaugh, because of the proximity of these locations to the Bethlehem Steel Company plants, where many of the immigrants found employment. The nearest Greek Catholic church was the Church of the Protection of B.V.M., established in Cambria City in the year 1895 and belonging to our Carpatho-Ruthenian brothers. At the turn of the century, a large number of Ukrainians, predominantly from the Sank-Lisko districts of Galicia, arrived here inorder to make a living for themselves and their families. As a result a sincere desire was born to build their own church. this desire was realized at the first meeting of the small Ukrainian community which was held on January 2, 1910.
