The Decoration of the Church |

The St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Johnstown, Pa., one of the largest in the city, was built in 1923. From the archetectural aspect, the interior of the Church is classical. It has wide ornamental arches, Roman column capitals, a marble border around the whole interior, as well as a large ceiling and wall spaces suitable for decoration. However, this church never had an adequate decoration harmonizing with its architecture. What had been previously done was of poor artistic quality and not always in accordance with the demands of the Byzantine rite. Only in recent years did the church representatives undertake a thorough renovation of the church interior according to the Byzantine customs and traditions. First a series of stained glass windows were installed in the sanctuary, and finally the plans of the undersigned artist were chosen for the decoration of the church interior. This work was completed from March to July of 1957. | |||
