What would you observe if you attended a typical Byzantine Liturgy? This is a typical celebration of the Eucharist step by step: today the liturgy begins with a "lttle office" comprised of three psalms, each followed by a brief litany and a prayer. This preparatory service is now an integral part of the liturgy itself. Over time, the great litany became enmeshed into this little office. The whole complex serves as a preparation rite, and is sometimes greatly abbreviated. |
